Day 8: Australian Parliament House

It's time to dig in to what I was up to on my 8th day down under! In total, I spent about half my time in Australia in the city of Canberra, so naturally I had to make time for parliament. The city is smaller than both Sydney and Melbourne, but it is actually the nation's capital.

The Australian Parliament house is situated on Parliament hill, overlooking the city. From here, you can catch some stunning views of the city and Mount Ainslie. The weather was absolutely perfect, so I decided to walk from the city.

The Australian coat of arms, with a raven (?) sitting on the emu's head. Bird on a bird!

They have free guided tours every day, and I arrived just in time for the 3:30 one. It was very informative and interesting, and the building is extremely well thought-out. Our guide, Stephen (with PH as in Parliament House), did not only have a thing for puns but he also knew a lot of random facts about the building, Australia's political system and the day-to-day jobs of the members of parliament. I learnt a lot!

Going up on the roof was definitely a highlight! Here you can see Old Parliament House, Lake Burley Griffin, the Australian War Memorial and Mount Ainslie.

I should have asked someone to take a photo of me, right? Lesson learned until next time I travel solo!

Stay tuned for posts on the Melbourne trip I went on the day after Parliament House! Til then. / Julia
